We each have a face we show to the world.

At different times, a different face.
Yet always one that protects
 the deepest part of us.

We sometimes use a smile
as a "mask" to hide hurt
or we may smile because we are happy.
Our mask we show the world,
or our many masks,
can hide our vulnerability, or our pain.
It can hide a gentle feeling person
 behind a mask of "brashness".
A mask can hide the devious,
 evil person behind
the laughing carefree person we see.

Yet we all wear a "mask".
Or maybe our masks are layered,
each time one is removed
another covers a different part of us.
We never show the true person we are
 except to very special people.
We wear one mask for our parents:
Another for our lover:
Another for our children:
Another for our intimate friends
and yet another to casual acquaintances.
Do we wear so many "masks",
to be what others expect of us,
that we lose sight of who we are
 behind the last mask?

In order to be true to ourselves,
and be all that we can be,
we must take time to sit back
and look inside our hearts,
 find who we are.
What we were and what we want to be.
If we don't do this,
we get into a cycle of being
what everyone around us expects us to be.
Not what we want
or were intended to be.

We are not happy, not really unhappy,
we just ARE.
Alive, spending our time as habit
 and others expectations demand.
Not living.
Not laughing because we are happy,
 but because its "expected".
Not doing the things we really want to do because we have forgotten what WE want, what's really important for us,
as an individual.

So, we need to be alone,
in silence,
and peel off each mask,
down to the very core of our being.
 Look inside ourselves,
 find who we are,
 what we are,
what we want to be.

Show whatever mask
keeps us "safe" from the world,
yet, inside knowing exactly who we are
and doing our best to be true to ourselves,
 and to our God.

In my honest opinion,
that is the only way we find true happiness.
A mask for the world around us.
If needed.
And absolute honesty with ourselves.
