Katherine

I would like to introduce you to,

and honor a very special

Lady.

Her name was Katherine,

she was born December 16, 1877.

Please notice the date here.

This was a time when a woman was not

measured by her beauty alone. Or by her

education, or lack thereof.

In the heartland of this country, the place

where food was produced, land acquired,

and money made, she was judged, and chosen

for her docility, her abilty to "work" and her

ability to produce strong, healthy children.

Katherine could, and did possess all of these

qualities.

Plus far more.

She gave birth to eleven children,

raised nine of them to be responsible, productive

adults. Everyone of them loving and respecting her,

for the woman,

the Mother,

the Wife she was.

She had five Grandchildren, and we

all knew her to be the most important person

in our life.

Though not possessing any "degree's" from

prestigious Colleges, not bringing home

an impressive pay check each week, she spent

long hours toiling at what was known as "woman's

work".

Still she made time to love us.

To teach us values and standards that

have served us well througout our lives.

The same values, the same standards that we

in turn tried to pass on to our children.

She was a tiny woman, in stature,

barely five feet tall,

and never weighed one hundred pounds

in her lifetime.

Yet,

she was, and still is, the biggest,

the greatest,

the most special woman in my life.

While John, her husband raised food to help

feed a nation, she raised food to feed her large

family.

Working side by side with him, they increased

the size of their farm from thirty acres,

to two thousand and four by the time he died in

1938.

No, she received no paycheck, no sick leave,

no vacation time.

However:

She received the love, and respect of all her

children, her grandchildren, and gave us the

awesome responsibility of passing on her

legacy to our children and grandchildren.

Her body died, in 1966, just before her

birthday, but her soul is as alive today

in all of us who were fortunate enough to share

in her love.

Her teaching, her values, will live forever as

we each pass along to our families, what she passed

to us.

She had all the attributes wanted/needed to be

a good wife in her generation.

But docile?

No.

Subservient?

No.

Just a wonderful woman, that lived in her

time, and shared her most important gift

with her family.

Her time.

And her love.

So, for all of us who remember her so well,

I say,

Thank you Grandma, for being you,

for loving us,

and teaching us so well.

Rest in Peace.
