Winter Time Reflections

No electricity, no water,
but I sit warm and comfortable in front of
a glowing fireplace, sipping Chablis and watching
the snow flakes swirl in the wind.

And I think of life:
My life.
Sometimes warm and cozy,
safe and serene as I am now,
sitting here reflecting.

But sometimes, like the storm raging outside,
my life has been cold, swirling out of control,
and covered with the snows of despair.

How does it start?
When does it end?
In retrospect, I am never sure.
Little things, like each flake of snow,
pile up until they are a bottomless drift that cover me.

Then suddenly, from somewhere,
there is a ray of sunshine.
Just one ray, but that is all it takes.
One ray of hope, and despair melts away,
replaced by optimism, then contentment.

So as I watch the embers in the fireplace,
and look out at each flake of snow buffeted by the wind,
I thank my God for the warmth of contentment,
of happiness.

And even though I know there will still be times
when the "snows of lost hope" will cover me,
there will always be a "ray of sunshine" that will
eventually come, and again, herald the dawn of renewed hope
and warmth.

We climb a mountain, one step at a time,
with faith, that each step brings us closer to the top.
So too, we travel the journey of life,
one day at a time,
one trial at a time,
knowing that eventually, the journey will end.
But hopefully, we have traveled,
one joy,
one trial,
one accomplishment,
at a time,
and we have LIVED, not merely been ALIVE.
