What Do You See

When you look at me, listen to
me,
what do you see? What do you
hear?
Do you see me as I am? Hear what
I say?
Or hear what you want to hear,
and see only what you want to
see?

Do you first see the color of my
skin,
or the way I comb my hair,
the home that I live in ,
or the clothes I wear?
Or will you take time to meet
the woman within?

I don't want to tell you the
trouble I've seen
the hurt I've suffered or hard
times I lived through
But I want to tell you that
through it all
I always did what I had to do
and always held on to hopes and
dreams.

But while you may judge me,
laugh when I cry,
(what gives you that right?)
you've never walked in my shoes
through the murky night,
Wait, listen, just look at the
world through my eyes.

Look back through the years with
me,
hear what I say, not just what
you want to hear.
Imagine the things I tell
happening to you,
how you would cope, and tell me
honestly
could you have held on to your
dream?
Or perhaps, just perhaps,
might you have done worse than
me?
Can you be sure?

Yes, you'd have tried, kept your
dream alive,
you'd have wept, as I did, and
grown stronger
with each falling tear, learned
to live each day
accept it, do the best you
could,
and looked at the world through
only your eyes.

So Please don't judge me by
gossip and lies
color of skin or the clothes I
might wear.
Just take time to listen , hear
what I say
walk in my shoes, if for only
one day
but most important,
look at the
world through my eyes.
Just for a day, see, with MY
eyes.
